Discover more about House of Leaves Museum

The House of Leaves, or Museum of Secret Surveillance, stands as a haunting reminder of Albania's communist past. Located in the heart of Tirana, at Rruga Ibrahim Rugova 12, the building served as the headquarters of the Sigurimi, the state security service, from 1944 to 1991. The name 'House of Leaves' comes from the climbing plants covering its facade, and also alludes to the hidden activities and the 'leaves' of files documenting the lives of Albanians. Originally built in 1931 as a private obstetrics clinic, the building was seized by the Gestapo during the German occupation in World War II. After the war, it became the central directorate of the Sigurimi, a place of dread for many Albanians. The museum opened its doors on May 23, 2017, with the mission to commemorate the innocent people who were spied on, arrested, prosecuted, convicted, and executed during the communist regime. Inside, the museum reveals the inner workings of a system designed for total control. Exhibits showcase surveillance equipment, original documents, and personal testimonies, illustrating the pervasive reach of the Sigurimi. Visitors can explore 31 rooms that display the techniques and devices used to monitor the population, including a darkroom and a laboratory. The museum also acknowledges the victims of the regime, creating a space for reflection on the importance of freedom and democracy. The House of Leaves has received recognition for its important work, including the Council of Europe's Museum Prize in 2020. A visit offers a chilling yet essential insight into Albania's history, making it a must-see for those seeking to understand the country's complex past.
