St Mary Church: A Byzantine Treasure

St Mary Church, also known as the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, is a significant historical and religious site located in the village of Labovë e Poshtme, near Libohova. This ancient Greek Orthodox church is one of the oldest Byzantine churches in Albania, with its foundation dating back to 554 AD during the reign of Emperor Justinian. According to legend, Justinian erected the church in memory of his mother and dedicated a piece of the True Cross to it. While the original foundation dates to the 6th century, some historians believe that the current structure reflects modifications from the 10th or 13th centuries. The church exhibits typical features of Byzantine architecture from the 9th to 11th centuries, including a cruciform plan with a high central cupola. The interior walls feature nine distinct levels of fresco paintings, depicting biblical stories and showcasing the artistic talent of the era.
