The Arqipeshkëvia Metropolitane Shkodër Katedralja e Shën Shtjefnit, dedicated to Saint Stephen, is the main Roman Catholic cathedral of Shkodër, Albania. The cathedral's history dates back to 1858, with construction completed in 1867, though a church dedicated to St. Stephen existed on the site of Rozafa Castle long before that. The land for the cathedral was donated by Palok Krandja. The cathedral boasts a neo-Gothic design, characterized by soaring spires, intricate stained glass windows, and a peaceful atmosphere. The structure can accommodate over 5,000 people. During the Siege of Shkodër (1912-1913), the cathedral suffered damage from Montenegrin army fire, which particularly affected the bell tower. The Kakarriqi brothers donated a clock to replace the damaged one. Under the communist regime, the cathedral was closed in 1967, and it was not until 1990 that it reopened as a symbol of religious freedom. The first Mass in the country since 1967 was held there on November 11, 1990. Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral in 1993, further solidifying its importance. Today, the cathedral serves as a vibrant center for the Catholic community, hosting religious ceremonies and cultural events throughout the year.
