Discover more about Museum of Fine Arts

The National Museum of Fine Arts in Algiers, opened in 1930, stands as a testament to Algeria's artistic heritage and its connection to global art movements. The museum's collection includes paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures, ceramics, furniture, and numismatic items. The museum's history dates back to the late 19th century when the municipality of Algiers preserved its art collection in the dilapidated premises of the Society of Fine Arts. A dedicated museum was created in 1908, but it wasn't until 1930 that the current building, designed by architect Paul Guion, was completed. The building itself is a blend of classical and modern design, with 35 galleries spread across three floors. The museum's collection includes European masterpieces from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries, featuring artists such as Eugène Delacroix, Claude Monet, and Gustave Courbet. It also houses an important selection of modern and contemporary Algerian art, highlighting the creativity and cultural identity of local artists. Visitors can explore both Western and North African artistic traditions under one roof. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, educational workshops, and cultural events.
