Palais Djenane Lakhdar, located in the El Madania district of Algiers, offers visitors a tranquil retreat into Algeria's past. This palace, also known as Djenane Lakhdar, is an architectural gem celebrated for its intricate design and verdant gardens. Constructed in the early 19th century, between 1800 and 1820, during the Ottoman era, Palais Djenane Lakhdar exemplifies the style of the 'diar el Fahs,' country houses used by dignitaries. The palace's design mirrors the ancient Casbah's douérate style, featuring a labyrinth of small rooms arranged with a 'foqani' (upper level) and a basement, accessible through a 's'qifa' (atrium) that opens into the 'ouast eddar' (courtyard). The palace was renovated in 1843 and included a water feature, fountain, and stables. Throughout its history, Palais Djenane Lakhdar has been owned by several prominent figures, including Ahmed Ben Mohamed Ben Zouaoui and Hafiz Dahmane Ben Ahmed. Later, it was acquired by the Lung family, who were winemakers. In 1954, Mrs. Lung bequeathed the palace to the Red Cross. Before becoming the residence of writer Mouloud Feraoun until his assassination in 1962. Today, Palais Djenane Lakhdar is undergoing restoration to preserve its historical and architectural significance. Visitors can explore the palace's grounds, admire the intricate tile work and elaborate designs, and immerse themselves in the beauty of the surroundings.
