Discover more about Château de Montségur

Château de Montségur, an iconic landmark in the Occitanie region, stands as a testament to a tumultuous past. Rising to an altitude of 1,207 meters, this "safe hill" (as its Occitan name suggests) was a strategic stronghold and a refuge for the Cathars, a religious group persecuted by the Catholic Church during the Albigensian Crusade. Originally built in the early 13th century, Montségur became the headquarters of the Cathar Church in 1232. In 1244, after a nearly year-long siege, the castle fell to the crusaders. Over 200 Cathars who refused to renounce their faith were burned at the stake, marking a tragic end to their resistance. Decades later, the fortress was rebuilt with the help of the King of France. Today, visitors can explore the castle ruins, wander through the remains of Cathar dwellings, and imagine life within the fortified walls. The site offers a powerful and emotional experience, with stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding Pyrenees. The nearby village of Montségur houses a museum where artifacts from the site are displayed, providing further insight into the history and culture of this remarkable location. Allow at least 60 minutes for a visit, plus the 30-35 minute climb up the steep mountain path from the parking area. Good walking shoes, water, and sun protection are recommended.
