Discover more about Château de Montségur

Château de Montségur, located in the Ariège department of southern France, is more than just a castle; it's a symbol of Cathar resistance and a site steeped in history. The name Montségur, derived from the Occitan language, means "safe mountain," and for the Cathars, it was their last major stronghold. Originally built in the 13th century on a site with traces of Neolithic and Roman occupation, the castle served as a strategic refuge for the Cathars, a religious group who faced persecution from the Catholic Church. In 1244, after a brutal ten-month siege by French royal forces, the Cathars surrendered. Those who refused to renounce their faith, over 200 people, were burned at the stake, an event that marked the end of Catharism. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the castle, which include a courtyard and a keep, and take in the stunning views of the Pyrenees. The challenging 30-minute hike to the top is well worth the effort, offering a chance to reflect on the history and sacrifice associated with this remarkable location. The site also includes an archaeological museum in the nearby village, providing additional context and artifacts related to the castle's past.
