Discover more about Château de Montségur

Château de Montségur, located in the Ariège region of the French Pyrenees, is a site steeped in history and legend. The castle's origins trace back to the Stone Age, with evidence of Roman occupation also found in the area. However, it is most renowned as the last stronghold of the Cathars, a religious group deemed heretical by the Catholic Church. In the 13th century, Montségur became a refuge for Cathar believers, with Raymond de Péreille rebuilding the castle to serve as a defensible center. The fortress was besieged multiple times, most famously in 1244 when it fell after a ten-month siege. Those Cathars who refused to renounce their faith were burned at the stake, marking a tragic end to their resistance. The current ruins, while referred to as a 'Cathar castle,' actually date from a later period, rebuilt by the Lévis family after the siege to consolidate the strategic position. Today, visitors can explore the castle remains, including the keep, and take in the stunning views. A museum in the nearby village of Montségur houses archaeological finds and provides historical context. The site is open to the public, with an entrance fee covering both the castle and museum.
