The Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum, located in Apache Junction, Arizona, is dedicated to preserving the history, artifacts, and folklore of the Superstition Mountains and the surrounding region. Founded in 1990, the museum started in a rented building in Goldfield Ghost Town and moved to its current location in 2003. The museum features a variety of exhibits, both indoors and outdoors. Inside the main building, visitors will find a museum gallery with a timeline that guides them through the history of the region, starting with Native American culture, early settlers, and gold seekers, and ending with the development and ranching life of the 1900s. There is also an extensive presentation explaining the geologic history of the mountain and displaying many of the minerals abundant in the region. Exhibits include the Jacob Waltz “Lost Dutchman” Exhibit, which explores the history, theories, and evidence of the Lost Dutchman Mine. The Native American Exhibit showcases human occupation in the area for the last 12,000 years. Outside, visitors can explore the Elvis Chapel and the Apacheland Barn, salvaged from the Apacheland Movie Ranch. Other outdoor exhibits include a working 20-stamp gold mill and a historical model railroad. The Superstition Mountain Museum Railroad (SMMRR) is a large outdoor G-scale model train layout that operates from November to May. The trains journey through Arizona history, depicting scenes from the late 1800s to the 1930s. A nature trail offers views of the Superstition Mountains and the surrounding landscape.
