Discover more about Historical Grand Canyon Airfield - Red Butte

The Historical Grand Canyon Airfield - Red Butte, nestled in the Kaibab National Forest, marks the spot of the Grand Canyon's first airport. Established in 1927 as Scenic Airlines, Inc., by J. Parker Van Zandt and B. Russell Shaw, the airfield played a vital role in early aviation, hosting notable figures like Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. The airfield's location near Red Butte, a prominent landmark on the Coconino Plateau, made it easily identifiable for pilots. Despite its historical significance, the airfield was short-lived. The Great Depression forced its sale shortly after opening. In 1967, with the opening of the Grand Canyon National Park Airport in Tusayan, Red Butte Airfield became obsolete. Although the lodge burned down in the 1990s, the remaining structures offer a tangible connection to the past. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2007, a testament to its contribution to aviation history. While exploring, be mindful of the "No Trespassing" signs on the buildings. The surrounding area offers stunning views of the Arizona landscape, including Red Butte itself and the distant San Francisco Peaks.
