Getting There

  • Driving

    From Sierra Vista, travel south on Highway 92 for approximately 13.5 miles to South Coronado Memorial Drive (State Route 83). Follow South Coronado Memorial Drive for 4.7 miles (which becomes East Montezuma Canyon Road) to the Coronado National Memorial Visitor Center. The trailhead is located a short distance up the road from the visitor center. Parking is free.

    During certain times of the year, a shuttle service may be available from the visitor center to Montezuma Pass, which provides access to the trail. Check with the Coronado National Memorial Visitor Center for availability and schedules. The shuttle is a six-mile drive up a dirt road. Shuttle fees, if applicable, vary.

Beginning near the visitor center, the well-maintained path offers scenic vistas of Montezuma Canyon and the San Pedro River Valley. As hikers progress, they're treated to diverse landscapes, including chollas, manzanitas, and seasonal wildflowers. The trail also crosses a narrow wash fed by Arizona white oaks. As the trail ascends towards Smuggler's Ridge, hikers can spot Mexican jays and Lucifer hummingbirds. The saddle at the top of the ridge offers views stretching into the grasslands of Sonora, Mexico. The trail connects with the Yaqui Ridge Trail, which leads to the U.S.-Mexico border. While the park lacks artifacts, the views provide a space to contemplate the history of Coronado's expedition.
