Discover more about Puerco Pueblo

Puerco Pueblo, meaning 'Village on the Rio Puerco,' offers a glimpse into the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans who inhabited this region over 650 years ago. Located within Petrified Forest National Park, the site features the stabilized masonry walls of a once-thriving pueblo, with over 100 rooms built around a central plaza. Inhabited primarily during the Pueblo IV period, from the mid-1200s to the late 1300s, Puerco Pueblo was strategically located near the Puerco River, a vital water source for crops like corn, beans, and squash. The river also served as a natural travel corridor, facilitating trade and the exchange of ideas with other communities. At its peak, the pueblo may have housed around 200 people. Visitors can explore the partially excavated ruins via a 0.3-mile paved loop trail. Along the way, discover numerous petroglyphs etched into the surrounding rocks, offering insights into the beliefs and daily lives of the Puebloan people. One notable petroglyph serves as a solar marker, interacting with sunlight during the summer solstice. The trail also passes by a historic check station, which houses a mini-museum with exhibits about the site. Unable to adapt to climate changes, the inhabitants systematically abandoned Puerco Pueblo by 1380. Today, the site stands as a testament to their ingenuity and resilience, inviting visitors to connect with the rich cultural heritage of the American Southwest.
