    From Mount Ida, take US Highway 270 East for approximately 13 miles. The turnoff for Hickory Nut Mountain Road will be on your left. If coming from Hot Springs, take US Highway 270 West for about 23 miles; the turnoff will be on your right, approximately 1.3 miles west of the Garland/Montgomery county line. Follow Hickory Nut Mountain Road as it climbs the mountain, taking the left fork at 1.0 mile. Continue for 3.2 miles to reach the vista overlook. Note that the 4-mile road to the top can be bumpy. There are no fees associated with accessing Hickory Nut Mountain Vista. Parking is free and readily available.

Hickory Nut Mountain Vista is a stunning overlook nestled in the Ouachita National Forest, near Mount Ida, Arkansas. The vista point, constructed over 60 years ago by the U.S. Forest Service, features a massive stone structure that provides sweeping views of Lake Ouachita and the rolling, forested hills. Dynamite was used to carve out the solid rock ridge at the top of the mountain to create this unique overlook. From the vista, numerous islands dotting Lake Ouachita can be seen, making it an especially beautiful sight during the autumn months when the surrounding foliage bursts into vibrant colors. The area is perfect for a peaceful escape, inviting visitors to breathe in the fresh mountain air and soak in the natural beauty. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the nearby Pollard Creek Trail, suitable for various skill levels. The vista also serves as a trailhead for the Lake Ouachita Vista (LOViT) Trail. The recreation area includes picnic tables scattered throughout the trees, offering glimpses of the panoramic view. A vault toilet and ample parking are available. Note that camping is not permitted in the picnic area. Lake Ouachita itself is a major draw, offering 40,000 acres of clear water perfect for swimming, boating, fishing, and scuba diving. The lake is surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest, adding to its pristine appeal.
