Discover more about Garni Historical and Cultural Museum

Nestled in the picturesque region of Garni, the Garni Historical and Cultural Museum serves as a gateway to Armenia's rich cultural tapestry. The museum is more than just a repository of artifacts; it offers an immersive experience that transports visitors back in time. The museum features an extensive collection of exhibits, including ancient artifacts, traditional Armenian crafts, and historical documents that narrate the story of the region and its people. One of the highlights is the impressive Garni Temple, an architectural marvel that stands as a testament to Armenia's ancient heritage. The temple was erected in the 1st century AD by King Tiridates I to honor the ancient Pagan God of Sun, Mihr. The temple has stood on the edge of the Garni Gorge for centuries despite attempts to purge paganism after Armenia converted to Christianity. However, in 1679, an earthquake destroyed the temple. It wasn't until 1966 that the structure was restored to the temple you see in Garni today. As you wander through the museum's halls, you'll encounter displays that detail the evolution of Armenian culture, from its pagan roots to the adoption of Christianity, giving you a well-rounded understanding of the nation's history. The museum also features the ruins of the royal palace and baths built according to the Roman methodology. The preserved mosaic floor of the bathhouse is made of 15-color natural stones and depicts sea and sea scenes. The museum-reserve is situated on a territory of 3.5 hectares and is 28 kilometers away from Yerevan. In 2011, the complex received the prestigious award of the UNESCO-Greece Melina Mercouri International Prize.
