Discover more about Haghartsin Monastery

Haghartsin Monastery, meaning 'Dance of the Eagles' , is a medieval monastic complex located 18 km north of Dilijan, in Armenia's Tavush Province. Built between the 10th and 13th centuries, the monastery was a significant cultural and scientific hub in medieval Armenia. The monastery's name comes from the legend of eagles playing around the church's dome during its consecration. The complex includes three churches: St. Gregory's (the oldest) , St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God, the largest) , and St. Stephen's. St. Gregory's dates back to the 10th century, while St. Astvatsatsin, completed in 1281, boasts a magnificent 16-faced dome. The refectory, built in 1248 by architect Minas, is considered one of the best examples of medieval Armenian architecture. Other notable features include a royal sepulchre, khachkars (intricately carved cross-stones), and the remains of an ancient oak tree planted by the Zakaryan princes. The monastery also has an underground passage that leads to the river, which was used as an escape route during wars. Visitors can explore the grounds, admire the architecture, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this mountain retreat. Modest attire is recommended when visiting.
