Discover more about Symphony of Stones

Nestled in the picturesque Garni Gorge, not far from the village of Garni, lies the Symphony of Stones, one of Armenia's most well-known and beautiful natural monuments. This breathtaking site features massive basalt columns, formed approximately 40 million years ago from cooling and crystallizing lava that flowed into the gorge from surrounding mountains. The columns, predominantly hexagonal and pentagonal, reach up to 50 meters in height and create an awe-inspiring spectacle that resembles the pipes of a grand organ, hence its nickname, the "Basalt Organ". The Symphony of Stones stretches for several kilometers along the Azat River, which adds to the beauty of the area. The unique geological formations are a result of volcanic activity and erosion over millions of years. As the lava cooled, it solidified into the distinct columns, which were later sculpted by wind and water. Visitors can explore the area by walking along a paved road that leads down into the gorge. The site also features the 11th-century Azat Bridge, constructed from the same basalt stones, adding a historical touch to the natural wonder. For those seeking more adventure, the Khosrov Forest State Reserve is accessible from the Symphony of Stones, offering a chance to discover Armenia's protected areas. The Symphony of Stones is a protected natural monument, emphasizing the importance of preserving this geological wonder. Photographers will find ample opportunities to capture the stunning interplay of light and shadow on the columns, especially during sunrise and sunset.
