Discover more about Mirabell Palace

Mirabell Palace and its gardens are an iconic symbol of Salzburg, drawing visitors with their vibrant beauty and rich history. Constructed in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau as Altenau Palace for his beloved Salome Alt and their 15 children, it was later renamed Mirabell by his successor, Markus Sittikus von Hohenems. The palace was redesigned in the Baroque style between 1721 and 1727 by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, creating the cohesive complex visitors admire today. The Marble Hall is the palace's most famous room, once serving as the Prince-Archbishop's ballroom and concert hall. Leopold Mozart and his children, Wolfgang and Nannerl, performed here. Today, the Marble Hall hosts weddings, conferences, and concerts. The Angel Staircase, created by Georg Raphael Donner, leads up to the Marble Hall, adorned with cherubic sculptures. The Mirabell Gardens, reshaped around 1690 by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, showcase a classic Baroque geometrical design. The gardens feature a large parterre with a central fountain and statues symbolizing the four elements. Other highlights include the Pegasus Fountain, the Hedge Theater, and the Dwarf Garden. The gardens gained further fame as a filming location for "The Sound of Music". Today, Mirabell Palace houses the offices of the Salzburg mayor and the municipal administration. The palace and gardens are open to the public, offering barrier-free access.
