Getting There

  • Walking

From Salzburg's Altstadt (Old Town), make your way towards Kapitelplatz, the square at the foot of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. From there, follow Festungsgasse, a gently ascending street that leads directly to the fortress. The walk takes approximately 15-20 minutes and offers scenic views of the city. Note that the path is relatively steep and paved.

  • Public Transport

Take the Festungsbahn funicular from Festungsgasse to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Several bus lines (1, 3, 5, 6, 25) stop at Rathaus or Ferdinand-Hanusch-Platz, both a short walk to Festungsgasse. A round-trip funicular ticket costs €12 for adults and €4.90 for children. Consider purchasing a Salzburg Card for free access to public transportation and the funicular.

  • Taxi/Ride-Share

Take a taxi or ride-sharing service to the Festungsgasse. Be aware that the Old Town is a pedestrian zone, so the taxi will drop you off at the base of the fortress. From there, you can either walk up the Festungsgasse to the fortress or take the funicular. A short taxi ride from the city center will cost approximately €10-€15.
