Discover more about Aussichtsturm Paulinenwarte im Türkenschanzpark

The Paulinenwarte, nestled within the verdant Türkenschanzpark in Vienna's 18th district, is a historical landmark offering a glimpse into the city's past. This 23-meter-high brick tower, constructed in the late 1880s, was designed by Anton Krones sen. in the architectural style of the nearby Cottageviertel villas. Emperor Franz Joseph I inaugurated the park and tower in 1888. Originally, the Paulinenwarte served a dual purpose: to provide panoramic views and to act as a water reservoir for the park. A metal tank in the tower's base was fed by a nearby well, distributing water throughout the park via an intricate system. The tower was named in 1909 to honor Princess Pauline Metternich, a key benefactor who donated many exotic plants to the Türkenschanzpark. After falling into disrepair and being closed to the public in the mid-1970s, the Paulinenwarte underwent extensive renovations and reopened in August 2010. Today, visitors can ascend the 89 steps to the top, enjoying views of Vienna and the surrounding Vienna Woods. While the trees have matured, partially obscuring the once-unobstructed vista, the tower remains a beloved destination. The tower is managed and opened by the Naturfreunde Währing on select weekends from April to October, weather permitting. The Türkenschanzpark itself is a sprawling green space with a rich history, dating back to the Turkish sieges of Vienna. The park was established in 1888 and designed as an English landscape garden. It features rolling hills, ponds, monuments, and diverse plant life.
