Getting There

  • Driving

    From Mayrhofen, take road #169 towards Ginzling. Continue to the Schlegeis Alpine Road, a 13.3 km toll road leading to the reservoir. The toll is €17 per car. The road features hairpin bends and tunnels. Parking is free at the top, but limited. Note that the road is generally open from late May to late October, 7 AM to 6 PM.

  • Public Transport

    From Jenbach, take the Zillertalbahn train to Mayrhofen. From Mayrhofen, take bus 4102 to Schlegeis Stausee. The bus journey takes approximately one hour and costs around €10. Check the VVT website for the latest bus schedule. The bus drops you off near the Olpererhütte trailhead.

Schlegeis Stausee, also known as Schlegeis Reservoir, is an artificial lake in the Zillertal Alps in Tyrol, Austria. Constructed between 1965 and 1971, it serves primarily for environmentally friendly electricity production and flood control. The reservoir holds a maximum water volume of 126.5 million cubic meters and reaches a depth of 59 meters.
