Discover more about Bukhara Caravanserai

Located in the heart of Baku's Icheri Sheher (Old City), the Bukhara Caravanserai is a captivating reminder of the city's vibrant past as a key trading hub on the Silk Road. Constructed in the late 15th century, the caravanserai provided lodging and a safe haven for merchants, particularly those from Central Asia, with a large contingent coming from Bukhara, hence the name. Caravanserais were essential to the Silk Road, acting as a combination of inn, warehouse, and trading post. The Bukhara Caravanserai is built in a square shape, featuring an octagonal courtyard designed to promote relaxation and trade. The structure is representative of the Shirvan-Absheron architectural style, characterized by its solid stone construction, arched balconies, and a prominent portal. Today, visitors can explore the caravanserai's courtyard and galleries, appreciating the intricate details of its design. The building also houses a restaurant where you can savor traditional Azerbaijani cuisine, offering a taste of the region's rich culinary heritage. The Bukhara Caravanserai stands opposite the Multani Caravanserai, allowing visitors to compare the architectural styles of different merchant communities that once thrived in Baku. A restoration in 1964 removed later additions, revealing the original 15th-century structure.
