Discover more about Lake Göygöl

Lake Göygöl, meaning "Blue Lake" in Azerbaijani, is a natural wonder located in the Goygol District of Azerbaijan, roughly 45 kilometers south of Ganja. This alpine lake, situated at the foothills of the Murovdag mountain range, boasts an elevation of 1,556 meters above sea level. Its stunning beauty and serene atmosphere have inspired Azerbaijani artists, poets, and musicians for centuries. The lake was formed on September 30, 1139, when a powerful earthquake caused a portion of Mount Kapaz to collapse, blocking the path of the Kürəkçay River. This natural damming created the lake, which stretches 2,800 meters in length and 800 meters in width, with a maximum depth of 96 meters. The water's exceptional clarity allows visitors to see up to 10 meters below the surface. Lake Göygöl is part of the Göygöl National Park, established in 2008 to protect the area's diverse ecosystem. The park is home to over 400 species of trees and shrubs, as well as various animals, including Caucasian deer, bears, foxes, and lynxes. The lake itself is inhabited by the Göygöl trout, a unique species that has evolved since the lake's formation. Visitors can enjoy walking and hiking trails around the lake, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. Boat tours provide a different perspective of the lake's beauty. The area also offers opportunities for birdwatching and picnicking. The best times to visit are during spring and summer when the weather is mild and nature is in full bloom. In the 19th century, German colonists settled in the area, founding the town of Helenendorf, which was later renamed Göygöl. Their legacy is still visible in the town's architecture.
