Discover more about The Azerbaijan Government House

The Azerbaijan Government House, also known as the House of Government, is a striking building in Baku, Azerbaijan, housing various state ministries. Located on Neftchilar Avenue, it faces the Baku Boulevard, with Uzeyir Hajibeyov Street bordering its rear. This places it in the heart of Baku's administrative and cultural center. The building's history is intertwined with Azerbaijan's political evolution. Plans for large government buildings in Baku were laid out in the 1920s. In 1932, a competition was announced for the design of the Baku Soviet Palace, later named the Government House. Architects Lev Rudnev, Vladimir Munts, and K. Tkachenko won the competition. Construction began in 1934 but was interrupted by World War II, with completion in 1952. Some sources cite 1936 as the start date. The architectural style blends traditional Azerbaijani motifs with Stalinist neoclassical elements. The facade features 50 marble columns, each over 13 meters tall, symbolizing 50 years of Soviet rule. A large dome, supported by four pillars, crowns the building. During the Soviet era, it served as the Communist Party headquarters. After Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, it became the seat of the country's government. The square in front was initially named Lenin Square, then Azadliq Square (Freedom Square). The building was designed to accommodate 5,500 people.
