Zagatala State Reserve, one of Azerbaijan's oldest and most vital nature reserves, was established in 1929. It is located on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. Spanning the Zagatala and Balakan districts, the reserve covers approximately 47,349 hectares. The reserve is dedicated to preserving and studying the unique flora and fauna of this region. The landscape is characterized by dramatic elevation changes, ranging from 650 to 3,646 meters above sea level. This variation contributes to diverse habitats, including lush mountain forests and sub-alpine meadows. The forests are composed of Caucasian oak, hornbeam, beech, elm, linden, ash, chestnut and walnut trees. The understory is adorned with shrubs, including ironwood, black currant, cornel, maple, cherry, and yellow rhododendron. Over 900 plant species have been identified within the reserve's boundaries. The reserve is a haven for wildlife, offering refuge to species such as the Caucasian red deer, brown bear, lynx, and the elusive Caucasian falcon. Visitors may also encounter Dagestan mountain goats, roe deer, wild boar, badgers, foxes, forest cats, lynxes and squirrels. Within the reserve, the Zagatala Waterfall offers a mesmerizing sight. Khalakhi Lake, a picturesque body of water nestled within the reserve, is also a must-see. Zagatala State Reserve is not only a place of natural beauty but also a center for scientific research and environmental education.
