Discover more about Shirvanshah tomb

The Shirvanshah Tomb, also known as the Shirvanshahs' Family Tomb, is a significant historical monument located within the Palace of the Shirvanshahs complex in Baku, Azerbaijan. This complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a testament to the Shirvan-Absheron school of architecture and the rich cultural heritage of Azerbaijan. The Shirvanshahs were a dynasty that ruled the Shirvan region, encompassing much of present-day Azerbaijan, from the 6th to the 16th centuries. In the 15th century, under the rule of Ibrahim I, the capital was moved from Shemakha to Baku after a devastating earthquake. This marked a period of significant construction and development in Baku, including the building of the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. The tomb was commissioned by Shirvanshah Khalilullah I in 1435-1436 as a burial place for his mother, Bika Khanim, and his son, Farrukh Yamin, as indicated by an inscription above the entrance portal. However, it later became the final resting place for other members of the Shirvanshah family. The architect's name, Muhammad Ali, is inscribed on the mausoleum's front in Arabic script in a teardrop design, readable only with a mirror. The Shirvanshah Tomb is a rectangular structure built from local limestone. It is topped with a hexahedral dome, which was originally adorned with vibrant turquoise enameling and intricate hexagonal stars. The portal, the only entrance to the tomb, is decorated with beautifully engraved floral and leaf motifs. Visiting the Shirvanshah Tomb offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the grandeur of medieval Azerbaijan. The intricate stone carvings, the somber atmosphere, and the historical significance of the site create a lasting impression on visitors.
