Discover more about Bibiheybat Mosque

Bibiheybat Mosque, also known as Bibiheybet Mescidi, is a prominent mosque located near Baku, Azerbaijan, gracing the coast of the Caspian Sea. The current structure is a replica completed in the 1990s, mirroring the original mosque from the 13th century, which was commissioned by Shirvanshah Farrukhzad II Ibn Ahsitan II. The original mosque was demolished in 1936 by the Bolsheviks. The mosque is not only a religious site but also a cultural landmark, representing the connection between Azerbaijan's past and present. Its reconstruction symbolized the revival of religious life in the country after the Soviet era. The mosque holds the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum, believed to be a descendant of Prophet Muhammad, making it a significant pilgrimage site for Muslims. Alexandre Dumas referred to it as the "Mosque of Fatima" during his visit in the 1850s. The architecture of the restored mosque reflects the Shirvan architectural style, featuring three domes, two minarets, and intricate tile work. Gilded inscriptions from the Quran adorn the interior of the domes. Visitors can explore the main prayer hall, the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum, and the serene courtyard with views of the Caspian Sea. The mosque accommodates up to 5,000 worshippers, and guided tours are available in multiple languages.
