Fountains Square, or Fəvvarələr Meydanı, is the cultural, social, and commercial heart of Baku. More than just a public space, it's a dynamic symbol of Baku's evolution, blending historical depth with European sophistication and modern urban charm. The square's history dates back to 1868 when the area was designated for military drills and parades, earning it the nickname "Parapet". In pre-Soviet times, it connected Icherisheher (Old City) with Baku's expanding suburbs. Initially barren due to water shortages, it was called the "Dry Garden". The situation changed in 1899 when Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev financed the Shollar Water Pipeline, bringing clean water to Baku. In the 1950s, architect I. Tikhomirov redesigned the square, adding landscaping and merging it with Nizami Square. A major upgrade in 1984 introduced the decorative fountains that gave the plaza its modern name. In 2010, a comprehensive renovation added paving, restored facades, removed kiosks, and introduced bronze sculptures like "Girl on a Bench" and "Girl with an Umbrella". Today, Fountains Square is a lively gathering place, hosting public festivals, shows, and celebrations. It's surrounded by boutiques, restaurants, shops, and hotels, making it an attractive destination for all. The square also provides access to nearby attractions such as Icherisheher (Old City), Baku Boulevard, and the Azerbaijan State Museum of Art.
