Char Kukri Mukri Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the southern Charfession Upazila of Bangladesh, on an island at the mouth of the Meghna River where it meets the Bay of Bengal. The sanctuary spans 40 hectares (99 acres) and is known for its unique estuarine ecosystem, characterized by dense mangrove forests and open mudflats. According to local stories, the island was once inhabited by numerous dogs and rats (locally called Mekur), inspiring its unique name. Human habitation on the island began around 1930, but a cyclone in 1970 swept away the entire population. People returned in the 1970s, and the Bangladesh Forest Department initiated afforestation programs, planting mangrove species to protect the coastline. The sanctuary is home to over 277 plant species, including Sundari, Gewa, and Keora trees. Wildlife includes Chitra deer, monkeys, foxes, wild goats, and various bird species. During the winter months, migratory birds flock to the island, making it a birdwatcher's paradise. The island's pristine beach offers a tranquil escape, with opportunities to witness stunning sunrises and sunsets. Char Kukri Mukri is recognized as a destination for eco-tourism, attracting visitors who seek to experience nature responsibly. The island's wildlife sanctuary plays a vital role in conservation efforts, protecting endangered species like the Olive Ridley turtles and preserving the island's unique ecosystem.
