Discover more about Madhupur National Park

Madhupur National Park, one of Bangladesh's earliest national parks, is a captivating destination for nature enthusiasts and cultural explorers. Officially established in 1982, the park encompasses 8,436 hectares (20,850 acres) of diverse ecosystems within the Madhupur Upazila of Tangail District. Located approximately 125 kilometers north of Dhaka, it offers a convenient escape from the capital's hustle and bustle. The park's landscape features flat-topped ridges intersected by depressions, creating a varied terrain that supports a rich biodiversity. About 40% of the forest area is covered in Sal (Shorea robusta) trees, making it one of the best Sal forests in Bangladesh. Other notable plant species include Dillenia pentagyna, Lagerstroemia parviflora, and Adina cordifolia. The undergrowth is shrubby, with Eupatorium odoratum, Pennisetum setosum, and Asparagus racemosus adding to the verdant tapestry. In total, 176 plant species have been identified within the park. While the park was once home to tigers and elephants, they are now extinct in the area. However, the park still boasts a diverse array of fauna, including 21 species of mammals, 140 species of birds, and 29 species of snakes. Keep an eye out for the capped langur, rhesus monkey, barking deer, and various bird species such as the stork-billed kingfisher and brown wood owl. The Madhupur National Park is also intertwined with the culture of the local Garo, Koch, and Baman communities. Visitors can learn about their traditional way of life by visiting nearby villages and learning about their customs and crafts. The park provides opportunities to purchase locally made silk fabrics and other handicrafts, supporting the livelihoods of these communities. However, the park faces challenges such as encroachment for agriculture and extraction of natural resources. Sustainable eco-tourism and community involvement are crucial for the park's long-term conservation.
