Opera Antwerpen is a cultural gem located on Frankrijklei in Antwerp, Belgium. This magnificent opera house has a rich history dating back to the 17th century, with the first public opera performances in Antwerp taking place in 1661. In the late 19th century, Flemish nationalists campaigned for a Flemish opera house as a counterweight to the Francophone Bourla Theater.
The building itself is a Neo-Baroque masterpiece designed by city architect Alexis Van Mechelen and Emiel Van Averbeke. Construction began in 1904, and the opera house officially opened on October 18, 1907. The opulent interiors feature pink marble columns in the foyer, a ceiling painting by Emile Vloors, and a grand auditorium adorned with stucco. The ceiling painting in the auditorium, created by Karel Mertens, depicts Rythmus, the source of all musical creations, accompanied by the nine muses.
Opera Antwerpen is home to Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, which performs in both Antwerp and Ghent.
