Discover more about St John Fortress

St John Fortress, also known as San Giovanni or St. Ivan Fortress, stands as a testament to Kotor's rich history and strategic importance. Perched 280 meters (919 feet) above sea level, the fortress is an integral part of the fortifications that once protected medieval Kotor. The climb to the top is a journey through time, with the walls themselves incorporating military architecture from the Illyrian, Byzantine, Venetian, and Austrian periods. The fortress's origins trace back to the 6th century when the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I reconstructed earlier fortifications. However, it was under Venetian rule, beginning in 1420, that the fortress received its current structure as part of Albania Veneta. The Venetians significantly improved the defenses to withstand Ottoman sieges and attacks. Over the centuries, the fortress endured numerous sieges, earthquakes, and changes in ownership, each leaving its mark on the structure. The ascent to St John Fortress begins in Kotor's Old Town, winding through narrow alleyways and past historic houses. The path then ascends via a series of approximately 1,350 stone steps. Along the way, you'll encounter the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, a 15th-century church offering a scenic resting point and stunning views. Higher up, remnants of the old fortifications become visible, offering glimpses into the fortress's past. Reaching the summit rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of Kotor Bay, the Old Town, and the surrounding mountains.
