Walking
The most direct route to St John Fortress begins from Kotor's Old Town. There are two main starting points near the North Gate (River Gate): one marked as "Road to Fort St. Ivan (San Giovanni)" and another as "Trailhead to the fortress". From the River Gate, walk straight and look for an archway on your left with the Lion of St. Mark. Pass through the arch, following signs for "Kotor Fortress". The trail then ascends via a stepped pathway, with an entrance fee of €15 typically charged during the day from May to October. Payment can be made in cash or by credit card. Keep your receipt for the descent.

Alternative Hiking Trail (Ladder of Kotor)
An alternative, free hiking trail known as the Ladder of Kotor offers access to the fortress, though it is longer and more challenging. This trail is located outside the Old Town. Follow signs for the Ladder of Kotor. Be aware that there are increasing efforts to prevent circumventing the toll, so access via this route is not guaranteed. This route may add 30 minutes to an hour to your hike.
