Discover more about Naufrágio do Porto

The Naufrágio do Porto, or Port's Shipwreck, offers a unique glimpse into maritime history beneath the waves of Fernando de Noronha. This popular dive site is the final resting place of the Asturia, a Greek cargo ship that met its end here in the 1930s. The ship lies in shallow waters, with depths reaching only about 8 meters (26 feet), making it an ideal location for both novice and experienced divers. The Asturia, measuring 160 meters in length, was transporting materials for railway construction in Argentina when it ran into trouble. After striking rocks, the captain sailed to the sheltered harbor in Santo Antônio to beach the vessel safely. Following the crew's disembarkation, a significant portion of the ship's cargo was looted. A decade later, another Greek vessel from the same company, the Maria Stathatos, also wrecked nearby and was intentionally burned, raising suspicions of insurance fraud. Today, the wreck site acts as an artificial reef, teeming with marine life. Divers can explore the skeletal remains of the ship, now home to a vibrant ecosystem of fish, algae, and other sea creatures. Given the shallow depth and generally calm conditions, it's also a common location for open-water dives for beginners. The Naufrágio do Porto is located within the Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA), an Environmental Protection Area.
