Discover more about Parque da Liberdade Fortaleza

Parque da Liberdade, or Freedom Park, is more than just a green space; it's a historical landmark in Fortaleza. The park's story began in 1890, initially named in reference to the liberation of slaves in Ceará, which occurred four years before the national abolition. The area was once the Garrote Lagoon, formed by the junction of two streams. Over the years, the park has undergone several transformations, reflecting different periods in Brazil's history. In 1922, it was renamed Parque da Independência (Independence Park) to commemorate the centennial of Brazil's independence, marked by the inauguration of a statue of an Indigenous person breaking chains at the entrance. In 1936, it was transformed into Cidade da Criança (Children's City), with the installation of a children's statue, becoming a notable educational space for children. In 1948, the park's name reverted to Parque da Liberdade. Today, the park provides a variety of attractions, including a central reflecting pool, a playground, and an outdoor gym. It also houses buildings of the Municipal Guard of Fortaleza and the Autarchy of Urbanism and Landscaping of Fortaleza (UrbFor). The park is a popular spot for families, offering a space for leisure and recreation in the heart of the city. The park is open to the public daily and provides a space for relaxation and recreation. It is a reminder of the city's past and a symbol of freedom and independence.
