The Monumento Nacional aos Mortos da Segunda Guerra Mundial, or National Monument to the Dead of World War II, stands as a tribute to the Brazilian soldiers who fought during World War II. Brazil sent approximately 25,000 troops, known as the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB), to fight alongside the Allies, particularly in the Italian Campaign. Designed by architects Marcos Konder Netto and Hélio Ribas Marinho, the monument was inaugurated on August 5, 1960. It comprises a range of symbolic and artistic elements, including a 31-meter-high portico, a metal sculpture honoring the Brazilian Air Force by Júlio Catelli Filho, and a granite sculpture by Alfredo Ceschiatti representing the three armed forces. A tiled mosaic wall mural by Anísio Medeiros pays homage to the Navy and Merchant Marines. The monument includes a below-grade mausoleum holding the remains of 467 Brazilian Expeditionary Force servicemen who died in action in Italy. These soldiers were initially buried at the Brazilian Military Cemetery of Pistoia in Tuscany before being repatriated in 1960. The site also features an exhibition room displaying military equipment and artifacts used by Brazilian soldiers during the war. The changing of the guard ceremony occurs on the first Sunday of June, August and October.
