The Catedral Basílica de Salvador, officially dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ, is the seat of the Archbishop of Salvador and a symbol of the city's historical and religious significance. Constructed by the Jesuits between 1652 and 1672, it represents the last remaining structure of the Colégio de Jesus architectural complex. The church's architecture showcases a blend of Mannerist, Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical styles, creating a unique and multifaceted landmark. The cathedral's façade, made of light Lioz stone imported from Portugal, is adorned with sculptures of Jesuit saints. Inside, the single-nave design features a main chapel flanked by smaller chapels, altars of varying styles, and rich decorations of gilded woodwork and marble. The altar-mor, constructed between 1665 and 1670, and the side chapels dedicated to Santo Inácio de Loyola and São Francisco Xavier, are particularly noteworthy. The cathedral also houses historical relics and works of art, including paintings and Baroque sculptures. Visitors can explore the cathedral's chapels, each showcasing altarpiece art from the late 16th to mid-18th centuries. The sacristy features a jacaranda wood chest and Renaissance paintings, while the cathedral maintains a valuable collection of Portuguese tiles and ceiling paintings. The Catedral Basílica de Salvador, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-see attraction for those seeking to immerse themselves in Brazil's colonial past and artistic heritage.
