Discover more about MAM - Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia

The Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (MAM-BA) is a cultural gem in Salvador, offering a blend of art, history, and stunning natural beauty. Located in the Solar do Unhão, a historical site dating back to the 16th century, the museum overlooks the scenic Bay of All Saints. The Solar do Unhão itself is a significant historical landmark. Originally an agro-industrial complex, it later became a snuff factory before being designated a national heritage site in 1943. In the early 1960s, the state government acquired the property and commissioned architect Lina Bo Bardi to restore it, envisioning a space dedicated to Bahia's rich cultural heritage. Bo Bardi, who also designed the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP), served as MAM-BA's first director. Her vision was to create a museum-school that would encourage and showcase the cultural production of Northeast Brazil. MAM-BA's collection includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, and drawings by renowned Brazilian artists such as Tarsila do Amaral, Portinari, and Rubem Valentim. The museum features five exhibition rooms, an outdoor sculpture park, and a cinema. The Sculpture Park offers a unique experience, blending art with the natural landscape overlooking the Bay of All Saints. Visitors can also explore the Rubem Valentim Room, which houses 50 works by the acclaimed Bahian artist. MAM-BA hosts a variety of cultural events, including concerts and workshops. On Saturdays, the museum comes alive with 'JAM no MAM,' a popular jazz event that attracts both locals and tourists. The museum also offers art workshops, providing open courses in painting, engraving, ceramics, drawing, and sculpture.
