Discover more about Memorial da América Latina

Inaugurated in 1989, the Memorial da América Latina (Latin America Memorial) in São Paulo stands as a testament to the cultural, political, social, and economic integration of Latin America. This expansive complex, designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer and envisioned by Brazilian anthropologist Darcy Ribeiro, spans 84,482 square meters and serves as a vibrant center for cultural and recreational activities. The architectural complex consists of several buildings arranged around two squares. Notable structures include the Tiradentes Hall of Acts, the Victor Civita Latin American Library (with its collection of 30,000 titles), the Brazilian Center of Latin American Studies, the Marta Traba Gallery of Latin American Art, the Pavilion of Creativity (housing a Latin American folk art collection), the Simon Bolivar Auditorium, and the Latin American Parliament building. At the heart of the main square, Praça Cívica, stands a striking concrete sculpture created by Oscar Niemeyer. This iconic artwork depicts an open hand in a vertical position, with the map of Latin America painted in red, symbolizing the region's tumultuous history of oppression and its enduring struggles for freedom. The red map serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of autonomy. The Memorial features a diverse collection of permanent artworks displayed both indoors and outdoors. The Memorial also hosts exhibitions, conferences, debates, screenings, theater performances, dance shows, and musical events. From 1989 to 2007, the Memorial hosted the Latin American Parliament, further solidifying its significance as a symbol of regional unity and cooperation.
