Discover more about Water Island

Water Island, often called the '4th Virgin Island', is a hidden gem in the U.S. Virgin Islands, offering a tranquil escape from the more crowded St. Thomas. Measuring just 491.5 acres, this small island is located in the Charlotte Amalie harbor, south of St. Thomas. With a population of fewer than 200 full-time residents, Water Island provides a unique, intimate Caribbean experience. Originally inhabited by the Taíno people, Water Island was named by Europeans for its freshwater ponds, which were vital for replenishing ships. Throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries, the island was dotted with cotton plantations owned by free black and mulatto individuals. In 1944, the U.S. government purchased Water Island to protect the submarine base on St. Thomas during World War II. Fort Segarra, an underground fort, was constructed but never completed, offering visitors a glimpse into the island's military past. Today, Water Island is known for its pristine beaches, including the popular Honeymoon Beach, known for its soft white sand and clear turquoise waters. Visitors can also explore the island's natural beauty by hiking to Limestone Beach or discovering the ruins of Carolina Point Plantation. Golf carts are the primary mode of transportation, adding to the island's charm. With its blend of history, natural beauty, and relaxed pace, Water Island offers a unique Caribbean experience. For those seeking a longer stay, Water Island offers a range of accommodations, from eco-friendly campgrounds to comfortable villas. The island's two restaurants, Dinghy's Beach Bar and Heidi's Honeymoon Grill, provide delicious local cuisine with stunning views. Whether you're relaxing on Honeymoon Beach, exploring Fort Segarra, or enjoying the local flavors, Water Island promises a memorable and peaceful getaway.
