Getting There

  • Taxi

    From Cruz Bay, taxis are available to Salt Pond Bay, the starting point for the Ram Head Trail. The taxi ride is approximately 35 minutes. Be sure to arrange a pick-up time in advance, as taxis do not routinely travel past Salt Pond Bay. Taxi fare from Cruz Bay to Salt Pond is approximately $30 for one person or $21 per person for two or more. It's best to confirm the rate with the driver before starting your trip.

    From the Salt Pond Bay parking lot, walk down the.3 mile path to Salt Pond Bay. Continue along the beach to the right, following the rocky shoreline. The trail then ascends into the hills towards Ram Head Peak. Follow the marked trail, which is about 1 mile each way. Be aware of uneven terrain.

Ram Head Peak is the southernmost point on St. John, within Virgin Islands National Park. The Ram Head Trail, approximately 2.3 miles round trip, is a popular hike known for its varied landscapes and breathtaking views. The hike is considered moderately difficult, with some steep and rocky sections, making sturdy footwear a must. The trail begins near Salt Pond Bay, a beautiful beach perfect for a post-hike swim. The path winds along the rocky shoreline, past the intriguing Blue Cobblestone Beach, and then ascends through a unique desert-like environment with diverse cacti. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including goats and various bird species. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of St. John's south shore, the Caribbean Sea, and, on clear days, the island of St. Croix. The peak offers a chance to reflect on the island's history; it is believed to have been a stronghold for Akwamu tribesmen who rebelled against slavery in 1733. The exposed summit can be windy, so be sure to hold onto your hat. The best time to visit is during the cooler months (December to July) or early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds. Remember to bring plenty of water and sun protection, as there is very little shade along the trail.
