Discover more about Virgin Islands National Park

Virgin Islands National Park, primarily located on the island of St. John, is a stunning protected area in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The park safeguards approximately 60% of St. John's land, as well as over 5,500 acres of adjacent ocean and nearly all of Hassel Island. Laurance Rockefeller, moved by the island's beauty, donated significant portions of land to the National Park Service, ensuring its preservation for future generations. The park officially opened in December 1956. The park's boundaries include 75% of the island, but private holdings reduce the park lands to 60% of the island acreage. Visitors can explore numerous hiking trails that wind through tropical forests, leading to historical sites and breathtaking vistas. The park also boasts pristine white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Divers and snorkelers can explore vibrant coral reefs and encounter diverse marine life. Historical ruins, such as the Annaberg Sugar Plantation, provide glimpses into the island's past, including its plantation era and the lives of those who lived and worked there. The park also protects Taino petroglyphs, offering insights into the island's pre-colonial history. The Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument, established in 2001, further protects the marine environment within and adjacent to the park.
