Discover more about Saint Nicholas Church, Varna

Located in the center of Varna, the Saint Nicholas Church is a beautiful Orthodox church built in 1865. Often called the 'Sea Church,' it is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and travelers, holding a special place in the hearts of the Varna community. The church was constructed thanks to a donation from Paraskeva Nikolaev, a Varna native who made his fortune as a merchant in Odessa. During a perilous sea voyage to Odessa, Nikolaev vowed to build a church and hospital in honor of St. Nicholas if he survived. True to his word, he bequeathed 50,000 rubles for the church's construction. A monument to Paraskeva Nicolau stands in front of the church. The church's architecture features a cross-domed design with a single cupola, three apses, and a low bell tower above the entrance. The interior was decorated in 1961 with religious frescoes by renowned artists Nikola Kozhuharov, Dimitar Gyudzhenov, Petar Dzhamdzhiev, and Petar Mihaylov. Inside, visitors can see paintings depicting sailors, fishermen, rough seas, anchors, and St. Nicholas, reflecting the city's close ties to the sea. Today, Saint Nicholas Church remains an active place of worship, offering a tranquil retreat from the vibrant city. Visitors can admire the artistry, light a candle, and experience the spiritual essence of this unique maritime temple.
