The Rwegura Dam Site Area is situated in the Cibitoke Province of Burundi and is known for the Rwegura Hydroelectric Power Station. It also supports the high-altitude tea plantations at Rwegura and Tora. The Rwegura Hydroelectric Power Station has been in operation since 1986. The dam impounds the Kitenge River, creating a lake at an elevation of over 2,000 meters (6,600 ft). The power station has three 6 MW turbine generators, giving it a total capacity of 18 MW. Financed by a loan from the African Development Bank, the project was approved in 1982 and completed in 1988.
