Walking
From downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, start at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and San Carlos Street. Head east on Ocean Avenue towards the Pacific Ocean. Continue straight until you reach the intersection with Lighthouse Avenue. Turn left onto Lighthouse Avenue and follow it as it becomes Del Monte Avenue. Stay on this road for about 2.5 miles. You will eventually enter Monterey. As you near the waterfront, look for signs directing you to Pacific Street. Turn right onto Pacific Street, and you will find Colton Hall Museum and Jail at 570 Pacific St on your left.

From Carmel-by-the-Sea, walk to the nearest bus stop on Ocean Avenue. Take the Monterey-Salinas Transit bus line 1 towards Monterey. The bus will take you along the coast and into Monterey. Get off at the stop nearest to Pacific Street. After disembarking, walk east along Pacific Street for about 5 minutes, and you will reach Colton Hall Museum and Jail located at 570 Pacific St.
