Built atop tunnels concealing Highway 101, it reconnects the Presidio's historic Main Post with the Crissy Field waterfront, offering a seamless transition from city to bay. This transformation replaced a former highway viaduct that had long divided the Presidio. The park features scenic overlooks with iconic 360-degree views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the San Francisco skyline. Visitors can explore walking trails, gardens, and picnic areas, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and recreation. The Outpost, a two-acre nature play area, provides children with hands-on activities and opportunities to connect with nature. The Presidio Tunnel Tops project reflects a commitment to inclusivity and community engagement. With its accessible design and diverse range of activities, the park welcomes visitors of all ages and backgrounds. The park's design incorporates native plant species, representing a strategic approach to the site's ecology. The Presidio's history dates back over 1,200 years, with Ohlone and Costanoan people inhabiting the area. In 1776, Spain established a military fort, followed by Mexican control until 1847 when the U.S. Army took over. The Presidio transformed from a military post to a national park site over the past two decades.
