Discover more about Memorial Church

Stanford Memorial Church, or 'MemChu,' is a stunning centerpiece of Stanford University, commissioned by Jane Stanford as a tribute to her late husband, Leland Stanford. Consecrated in 1903, the church reflects the Stanfords' vision of a university that nurtures both intellect and spirit. Its design, a harmonious blend of Romanesque and Byzantine influences, draws inspiration from the churches of Venice and Ravenna. The church's exterior is adorned with a breathtaking mosaic depicting Christ welcoming the righteous into the Kingdom of God. Inside, visitors are enveloped in a dimly lit, cave-like space illuminated by glowing mosaics and vibrant stained-glass windows. The interior mosaics, crafted by Maurizio Camerino's team, feature over 20,000 shades of tesserae and took five years to complete. The stained-glass windows, created by J. and R. Lamb Studios of New York, depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Throughout its history, Memorial Church has served as a non-denominational sanctuary open to all faiths. It has also endured and been restored after two major earthquakes in 1906 and 1989. Today, the church continues to host regular services, events, and weddings, and welcomes visitors to explore its art, architecture, and spiritual atmosphere. Docent-led tours are available every Friday at 11 AM.
