Discover more about Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park

Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park is a captivating destination that blends history, natural beauty, and coastal charm. Located south of Pescadero on Highway 1, the park's centerpiece is the 115-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses in the United States. Named after the clipper ship Carrier Pigeon, which wrecked nearby in 1853, the lighthouse was built in 1872 to guide ships navigating the treacherous waters. For over a century, its Fresnel lens, illuminated by a five-wick lard oil lamp, cast a beam visible for up to 24 miles. Today, though the original lens is displayed in the Fog Signal Building, an automated beacon continues to aid navigation. Visitors can explore the park grounds, discover the historic Fog Signal Building, and enjoy the views. During whale migration season (mid-March through May), the park becomes a prime spot for whale watching. The intertidal zone teems with marine life, and the nearby beach offers a place for relaxation. The lighthouse is currently undergoing restoration, with work expected to continue for some time. While the tower is closed, visitors can still experience the park's rich history through guided tours, exhibits, and the stunning coastal scenery.
