Discover more about Mount Shasta City Park

Mount Shasta City Park is a verdant 26-acre urban park located one mile north of downtown Mount Shasta City. The park is home to the Mt. Shasta Recreation and Parks District Headquarters and the headwaters of the Sacramento River. Historically, the land served as hunting grounds for the Wintun, Okwanuchu, and Maidu Native American tribes. In 1901, a water wheel was installed at Big Springs, providing the city's first source of energy for streetlights. From 1920 to 1943, the park was the summer campus for California State University, Chico, with several park buildings originating from this time. The park offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including picnic areas, a playground, nature trails, and community buildings. The headwaters of the Sacramento River emerge from Big Springs Hill, filtered through volcanic rock for over 50 years. This crystal-clear water is a popular spot for visitors to drink and collect water. The park also features the Upper Lodge Recreation Center, Lower Lodge, and the historic Rod and Gun Building, all available for rental and community events. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the paved ADA walkway, explore nature trails, and relax by the Headwaters Spring. The park is a hub for community activities and events throughout the year.
