Discover more about Junipero Serra Statue

The Junipero Serra Statue in San Mateo stands as a focal point for discussions surrounding California's complex history. Dedicated to Junipero Serra, a Franciscan friar canonized as a saint by Pope Francis in 2015, the statue recognizes his role in establishing the California mission system. Serra founded nine of California's 21 Spanish missions during the late 1700s, aiming to convert Native Californians to Catholicism. However, Serra's legacy is fraught with controversy. Despite the criticism, some defend Serra, citing his efforts to protect Native Americans from Spanish soldiers and his dedication to spreading his faith. The statue is located within Junipero Serra Park, offering visitors a natural setting for contemplation. The park itself spans over 100 acres and provides panoramic views of the Bay Area, including San Bruno Mountain, San Francisco Airport, and Mount Diablo.
