Discover more about Monte Bello Open Space Preserve

Monte Bello Open Space Preserve, meaning "beautiful mountain" in Italian, is a 3,133-acre haven in the Santa Cruz Mountains, offering a diverse landscape of rolling grasslands, dense forests, and panoramic views. The preserve encompasses the upper Stevens Creek watershed, nestled between Monte Bello Ridge and Skyline Ridge. Black Mountain, the highest point on Monte Bello Ridge, stands at 2,800 feet and provides a stunning backdrop visible from many Peninsula communities. Historically, the area was home to Italian farmers and winemakers in the 19th century, followed by dairy farms that supplied milk to San Francisco. Remnants of this past can be seen along the Waterwheel Creek Trail, where old orchards and vineyards once thrived. In the 1970s, a commune known as "The Land" resided along Canyon Trail. Today, Monte Bello offers over 15 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and equestrian use. The Stevens Creek Nature Trail is a popular 3-mile loop with interpretive signs that descends into a forested canyon along the San Andreas Fault. For a challenging climb, hike to the summit of Black Mountain for 360-degree views of the Bay Area. The preserve also connects to other open spaces like Skyline Ridge and Rancho San Antonio, offering endless exploration opportunities. Whether you're seeking a challenging hike, a peaceful nature walk, or a glimpse into the past, Monte Bello Open Space Preserve offers a refreshing escape into the heart of the Peninsula's natural beauty.
