Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve, a sprawling 3,137-acre park in the Santa Cruz Mountains, provides a tranquil escape with breathtaking vistas. From its ridgelines, visitors can witness panoramic views stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the San Francisco Bay, encompassing Silicon Valley and the Diablo Range. The preserve's landscape is a tapestry of diverse habitats, featuring both dense forests and open meadows. In spring, the meadows burst into color with vibrant displays of wildflowers like poppies and lupine. As summer progresses, the hills transform into a golden expanse adorned with gumweed and mule's ear. History echoes through these hills, named after a Russian immigrant, Mr. Paskey, who ran a dairy farm here from the 1920s to 1950. The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District began acquiring the land in 1978, preserving it from potential development. Today, Russian Ridge offers over 10 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian activities. Popular trails include the Ridge Trail, known for its sweeping views and spring wildflowers, and the Ancient Oaks Trail, which winds through a shaded forest. Borel Hill, the highest point in San Mateo County at 2,572 feet, offers 360-degree views of the Bay Area. The Mindego Hill Trail leads to the top of an ancient volcano. Russian Ridge is also a haven for wildlife, with diverse plant communities and abundant springs attracting various species. Raptors soar overhead, coyotes patrol the ridges, and the steep canyons provide refuge for animals. The preserve is open from a half-hour before sunrise until a half-hour after sunset.
